The following are defined by the NBR, but always check with your local council too.

1. New houses, apartments, and townhouses
2. Extensions or additions (e.g. extra rooms, garages, balconies)
3. Granny flats or backyard dwellings
4. Commercial buildings like offices, shops, and warehouses
5. Converting a garage into a living space
6. Changing the use of a building (e.g. from residential to business)
7. Major renovations that affect structure, drainage, or fire safety
8. Boundary walls over 1.8 meters high
9. Swimming pools and large water features
10. Carports
11. Pergolas, and verandas (depending on size and permanence)
12. Sheds or outbuildings larger than a certain size (varies by municipality)
13. Retaining walls and decks
